New York Fashion Week 2015: Did the Kanye West x Adidas Collaboration Live Up to the Hype?

The chatter surrounding Kanye West these past few weeks has been constant.  First, it was about his union with Paul McCartney and Rihanna.  Then, it was about his rant against Beck at the Grammys.  Now, the focus has turned to his inaugural debut collaboration show with Adidas at the New York Fashion Week.

All eyes were on him especially since his first eponymous collection of womenswear at the Paris Fashion week met with awful reviews back in 2011.  The reviews, this time around, have been mixed.  For example, Vogue heralded it as “memorable [and] … satisfyingly instigative for a line of sportswear.”  Meanwhile, in her piece for New York Magazine, Cathy Horyn equated the positive responses to the collection as a type of fashion Stockholm syndrome.  She also noted that the collection was aesthetically similar to the designs of Rick Owens and NSF but with “no synthesis or transcendence of these references.”

Whether you think the show was indistinctive and unremarkable or that it was the best thing since sliced bread, one thing is for sure: Kanye had a point of view and he remains unapologetically himself.
